A ladle furnace is a smelting facility used for refining molten steel outside the furnace. It primarily processes molten steel from primary furnaces (electric arc furnaces, converters, and open-hearth furnaces) and performs heating, refining, and temperature regulation.
LF furnace utilize arc heating, reducing slag production, and bottom-blowing argon agitation to achieve rapid desulfurization, uniform steel composition and temperature, and remove inclusions, thereby improving steel purity. Ladle refining furnaces are essential metallurgical equipment for continuous casting and rolling processes.
Ladle refining furnaces typically use argon (Ar) for bottom-blowing agitation, primarily to promote circulation, uniform temperature, adjust composition, and remove inclusions.
Injecting argon into the bottom of the ladle improves melt mixing. Argon purging also helps remove impurities from the molten steel, improving steel quality. In addition to argon, oxygen and nitrogen can also be used in LF ladle furnaces, but their functions and effects differ from those of argon purging.
The main functions of the purge gas are:
Bottom-blown gas is injected into the bottom of the ladle, creating effective circulation and uniformizing the temperature and composition.
Purge gas promotes uniform composition, laying the foundation for subsequent composition adjustments.
Purge gas helps to float inclusions in the molten steel, improving the purity of the steel.
Serves as a shielding gas, preventing the molten metal from coming into contact with oxygen in the air, thereby reducing the formation of oxides.
Argon is the most common choice. Its an inert gas that doesn't react with the molten steel, making it an ideal shielding and stirring gas.
Carbon dioxide is also used in some cases because it is less likely to erode the ladle's air bricks during purging, and research has shown that it can be used in the LF furnace refining process to improve steel cleanliness.
Whichever purge method is used, its important to select the appropriate one for the ladle furnace based on the specific metallurgical conditions.
