The LF refining furnace process can process various types of steel, primarily depending on the control of chemical composition, temperature management, and blowing/gas-assisted process parameters within the furnace. Commonly applicable steel grades include:
Low-carbon & medium-carbon steels: such as plain carbon steel, structural steel, and general-purpose steel.
Low-alloy steels: small-batch or medium-content alloy steels requiring strict control of alloying elements (such as Cr, Mo, Ni, V, Nb, etc.)
High-strength low-alloy steel (HSS): achieving uniform composition and good microstructure through refining.
Alloy structural steels: steel grades requiring improved strength, toughness, and wear resistance.
Die and tool steels: steel grades with high requirements for purity, carbon content, and alloying element distribution.
Low-temperature steels and wear-resistant steels: achieving the required chemical composition and temperature control through refining to improve low-temperature toughness or wear resistance.
High-purity steels: steels with strict control over impurities such as sulfur, oxygen, and nitrogen; LRF helps remove impurities and improve the quality of molten steel.
Complex Alloy Steels: Steel grades requiring precise control of the content of multiple elements (such as Cr, Mo, Ni, V, Ti, N, etc.) to meet the performance requirements of specific industry applications (automotive, aerospace, energy, etc.).
To obtain stable and uniform molten steel composition, good microstructure, and properties by blowing, degassing, desulfurizing, removing inclusions, and precisely controlling chemical composition and temperature within the ladle.
Gas blowing/needle or rod-assisted mixing promotes contact between molten steel and gas, floats inclusions, and increases reaction rate.
Gas-reaction processes such as degassing, denitrification, and desulfurization reduce the content of gases and non-metallic inclusions in the molten steel.
Precise temperature and chemical composition control (such as C, Si, Mn, S, P, V, Nb, Ti, Cr, Mo, Ni, etc.) to achieve the composition profile of the target steel grade.
Temperature management of the cooling/heating section to ensure pouring temperature and uniformity of molten steel.
Ladle (Ladle Furnace) Body: Contains molten steel, refractory materials, ladle cover, etc.
Gas System: Supply and control valves and flow meters for caustic gases, inert gases, oxygen, or hydrogen required for blowing.
Degassing and Desulfurization Device: Degassing/degassing system, slag pot, gas passages, etc., inside the furnace mouth or ladle.
Cooling and Temperature Control System: Water cooling and heat management system for temperature control of the ladle and LF refining furnace body.
Measurement and Control System: Online or semi-online measurement of furnace temperature, conductivity, pressure, and chemical composition; automated control system (DCS, PLC, SCADA, MIS, etc.).
Sampling and Analysis Equipment: Periodic sampling, chemical composition analysis, and metallographic analysis to adjust the process.
