Slag formation is a crucial process in steelmaking. Poor slag formation makes it difficult to remove impurities such as phosphorus, leading to a series of problems, especially prolonged smelting time, increased power consumption, and reduced furnace lifespan.
To shorten the smelting cycle and improve productivity, electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking uses higher secondary voltages for long-arc smelting. Due to the strong radiation of the long arc, foamed slag technology is used to shield the arc.
Foamed slag technology involves injecting carbon powder into the molten pool during EAF smelting, simultaneously blowing oxygen. This creates a strong carbon-oxygen reaction, forming a large amount of CO gas foam within the slag layer. This increases the slag thickness, completely shielding the arc, reducing arc radiation, extending the furnace lifespan, and improving the furnace's thermal efficiency.
Good foamed slag helps improve heat transfer from the arc to the molten steel, reduces gas absorption in the molten steel, reduces furnace dust erosion, and lowers noise. Simultaneously, the increased steel-slag contact area is highly beneficial for dephosphorization of the oxidizing slag.
Foamed slag technology, when used in large-capacity ultra-high-power electric furnaces, can greatly improve heat transfer efficiency, shorten smelting time, reduce smelting power consumption, increase furnace life, and reduce furnace lining material consumption.
