Submerged arc welding is a process of welding in a submerged arc furnace by using the heat generated by the arc discharge between the welding wire and the workpiece to achieve welding under the granular flux covering layer.
This arc melts the welding wire, flux and parent metal, and finally forms a weld to achieve the connection of the workpiece. Because the arc is buried under the flux layer, it is named submerged arc welding. This welding method has the characteristics of high welding quality and high production efficiency, and is widely used in industrial production.
The heat of submerged arc welding mainly comes from the arc burning between the welding wire and the workpiece during welding. This arc is generated under the flux layer, thereby transferring heat to the welding wire, flux and parent metal, causing them to melt and form a weld.
The principle of submerged arc welding is to use the arc when the submerged arc furnace is running as a heat source to generate heat at the welding site, and then melt the welding wire, flux and parent metal together to form a weld through the protective effect of the flux. Its core principle includes three stages:
After the welding power is turned on, an arc is generated between the welding wire and the workpiece. The flux is decomposed by heat to form liquid slag and gradually solidifies into a solid surface layer, completely shielding the arc.
The arc heat (temperature can reach 5000-8000℃) melts the end of the welding wire, the surface of the base material and part of the slag at the same time, forming a metal molten pool in the welding area. This process is accompanied by the following effects:
CaO-SiO₂ system slag (about 1600℃) formed by the decomposition of the flux covers the molten pool
Physical isolation of the slag prevents atmospheric intrusion
Chemical activity of the slag purifies the metal surface
As the welding car moves, the molten pool metal undergoes: Melting → Deoxidation and desulfurization → Crystallization and solidification Finally, a weld composed of a mixture of welding wire metal and base material is formed, and the surface is covered with a cooled glassy slag shell.
The flux has a protective effect during the welding process. It can isolate the air, prevent slag splashing and ensure the quality of the weld.
Deep penetration (up to 20mm)
Beautiful weld formation
Welding speed is 3-5 times faster than manual arc welding
Automatic slag covering reduces cleaning workload
In simple terms, the heat generated in submerged arc welding is due to the burning of the arc, and the heat generated by the burning of the arc melts and combines the welding wire, flux and base material to form a weld.
