Silicon manganese alloy is an alloy composed of manganese, silicon, iron, a small amount of carbon and other elements. It is a ferroalloy with a wide range of uses and a large output. Its consumption ranks second among ferroalloy products of electric furnace and submerged arc furnace.
The manganese and silicon in manganese silicon alloy have a strong affinity with .oxygen. When manganese silicon alloy is used in steelmaking, the melting points of the deoxidation products MnSiO3 and Mn2SiO4 produced are 1270℃ and 1327℃ respectively. They have the advantages of low melting point, large particles, easy floating and good deoxidation effect.
Under the same conditions, the burnout rates of manganese or silicon alone for deoxidation are 46% and 37% respectively, while the burnout rates of manganese silicon alloy for deoxidation are both 29%.
Silicon manganese alloys are produced by using carbon to simultaneously reduce manganese oxide and silicon dioxide in manganese ore (including manganese-rich slag) and silica in a submerged arc furnaces.

Silicon manganese can reduce oxide inclusions in steel, improve the organizational structure of steel, and make it have better mechanical properties.

Silicon manganese alloy is also a semi-finished product for producing medium and low carbon ferromanganese and electrosilicon thermal method metallic manganese.
