In the steel production industry, the LRF plays an indispensable role as a crucial external refining device. It primarily performs secondary refining on molten steel after melting in primary refining furnaces (such as electric arc furnaces and converters).
It not only efficiently removes various impurities from the molten steel, improving its purity, but also precisely regulates the temperature to fully meet the stringent requirements of subsequent processes such as continuous casting and rolling.
Notably, the ladle furnace boasts relatively low investment costs and a simpler equipment structure, making it a key component of the steel production process and an essential link in the overall workflow.
During operation, the LF furnace employs various advanced technologies to refine the molten steel. Among these, electric arc heating and argon stirring are its core methods. Electric arc heating rapidly raises the temperature of the molten steel and allows for precise temperature control, while argon stirring promotes thorough mixing and reaction within the molten steel.
Through these methods, the ladle refining furnace can complete a series of operations, including deoxidation, desulfurization, and fine-tuning of the steel composition, thus meeting the stringent requirements of continuous casting and rolling processes. This refining process not only significantly improves steel quality but also effectively shortens the smelting cycle. Simultaneously, it acts as a "bridge" connecting the primary refining furnace and the continuous casting machine, providing a good process buffer and ensuring smooth transitions throughout the entire production process.
Heating & Holding:
Raising the temperature of molten steel through electric arc heating ensures it meets the requirements of subsequent processes and allows for the simultaneous addition of alloys and slag.
Argon Stirring:
Argon gas is blown into the permeable bricks at the bottom of the ladle to enhance steel stirring, promote deoxidation and desulfurization reactions, and achieve homogenization of steel composition and temperature.
Deoxidation & Desulfurization:
Under the synergistic effect of the high-basicity reducing slag (white slag) formed by electric arc heating and argon stirring, oxygen and sulfur elements are deeply removed from the molten steel.
Composition Fine-tuning:
Alloying elements can be precisely added during the refining process to ensure the chemical composition of the molten steel meets the final product specifications.
Vacuum Degassing:
Some LF refining furnaces units are equipped with a vacuum degassing system, which can effectively remove harmful gases such as hydrogen and nitrogen from the molten steel under vacuum conditions, further improving the cleanliness of the steel.
1. Tapping and Transfer: Molten steel from the primary refining furnaces (electric arc furnace or converter) is poured into the ladle and transported to the LF station.
2. Refining Process: Refining and controlling the molten steel is achieved through electrode heating, argon stirring, and the addition of alloys and slag.
3. Process Buffer: The ladle furnace serves as a key buffer between the primary refining furnaces and the continuous casting machine, effectively balancing the production rhythm and improving equipment utilization and production efficiency
4. Continuous Casting Preparation: Molten steel that has reached the target temperature and composition after refining is sent to the continuous casting machine for continuous casting.
The above is a detailed introduction to the role and characteristics of the LRF in steel mills. We hope it provides you with valuable reference information.
