The principle of titanium slag furnace:

The principle of producing titanium slag by electric furnaces method is that ilmenite and solid reducing agent (anthracite or coke, etc.) are mixed in a certain proportion and added to the electric furnace for reduction smelting. The iron oxide in the mineral is selectively reduced to metallic iron, and the titanium oxide is enriched in the slag. After the slag and iron are separated, titanium slag and by-product metallic iron are obtained.

The following are the general steps and processes of the process:

• 1. Raw Material Preparation:

First, prepare titanium slag (usually a mixture of titanium oxide and other impurities). The quality and composition of titanium slag directly affect the smelting effect.

• 2. Mixing & Batching:

Mix titanium slag with a certain proportion of reducing agent (such as magnesium or aluminum) and flux (such as calcium fluoride). The role of the reducing agent is to reduce titanium oxide to metallic titanium, while the flux helps to reduce the melting temperature and improve fluidity.

• 3. Electric Furnace Smelting:

Heating: The mixture is placed in an electric arc furnace and heated to a high temperature (about 1600°C) by an electric arc to react the titanium oxide in the titanium slag with the reducing agent.

Reduction reaction: At high temperature, titanium oxide reacts with the reducing agent to produce byproducts such as metallic titanium and titanium dioxide.

Collecting metallic titanium: Due to its high density, metallic titanium will sink to the bottom in a molten state. After a period of smelting, the metallic titanium can be collected through the furnace outlet.

• 4. Cooling & Removal:

After smelting, stop heating and let the material in the furnace cool naturally. The metallic titanium and slag will be layered for subsequent removal.

• 5. Refining & Post-processing:

The collected metallic titanium usually needs further refining to remove residual impurities and ensure that its purity meets industrial requirements.

• 6. Finished Product Processing:

The smelted and refined titanium metal can be processed into different shapes and specifications to meet different application requirements.

The advantage of the titanium slag electric furnace process is that it can efficiently extract titanium metal from titanium slag. However, it also requires high energy consumption and appropriate safety measures, especially when dealing with high temperatures and harmful gases.

The existing titanium slag electric furnace melting process is divided into intermittent smelting, continuous smelting and electrode air feeding continuous method according to the characteristics of the molten pool, and the charging method is divided into open electric furnace, closed electric furnace and semi-closed submerged arc furnace.

Different smelting processes are selected according to different requirements. The pressure control requirements in the electric furnace are relatively high, and the explosion-proof holes on the furnace cover play a role in maintaining a certain pressure. Temperature measuring thermocouples are installed in different places in the furnace layer of the electric furnace to measure the temperature of the refractory materials at various positions to determine the degree of erosion of the refractory materials.
