How Does a LRF Furnace Work?
LRF furnace is a metal smelting equipment, which has the heating and refining functions of steelmaking furnace. It is mainly used to further refine the molten steel melted by the primary refining furnace (such as electric arc furnace, open hearth furnace, converter), and can adjust the temperature of the molten steel to achieve process buffering to meet the needs of continuous casting or other production processes.
So how does a LRF furnace work? Sanrui Electric Furnace has just shipped a 120 ton dual station ladle refining furnace recently, and it will be used as an example to illustrate the following.
The workflow of the 120 ton dual station ladle refining furnace involves multiple steps, mainly to improve the efficiency of steelmaking and better control the composition of molten steel. After the molten steel is hoisted into the vacuum tank through the ladle, a steam jet pump is used for vacuum degassing, and argon gas is blown into the bottom of the ladle to stir the molten steel, which can remove the hydrogen and nitrogen content in the molten steel, and further reduce the oxygen and sulfur content, and finally obtain a higher purity molten steel and a material with superior performance.
The following is its basic workflow:
1. Molten steel preparation:
The primary refining furnaces (such as a converter) first melts scrap steel and alloy materials to obtain about 120 tons of molten steel. The molten steel is then transferred to a double-station ladle refining furnace.
2. Double-station design:
The double-station design allows one furnace to be refined while the other furnace can prepare the next batch of molten steel. This can greatly improve production efficiency and reduce waiting time.
3. Deoxidation & refining:
In the ladle, the molten steel is stirred by blowing inert gas (such as argon) into the molten steel to achieve good oxidation and desulfurization effects.
The composition and properties of the molten steel are adjusted by adding alloying elements (such as manganese, chromium, nickel, etc.).
As needed, additives and reagents can be added at this stage to further purify the molten steel.
4. Temperature & composition control:
The molten steel is kept at the required temperature by a heating system in the ladle (such as electric heating or gas heating) to ensure its fluidity and uniform composition.
During the refining process, the temperature and composition of the molten steel are constantly monitored to achieve precise control and ensure that the final product meets the requirements.
5. Slag & molten steel separation:
After refining, the molten steel and slag will be separated, the slag will be dumped, and the molten steel will be poured into the mold or transferred to the next process.
6. Ladle transfer & cleaning:
After refining, the refined ladle will be removed and the new molten steel will be transferred to the unrefined ladle to continue production.
Clean the residue in the ladle furnace and perform equipment maintenance to keep the equipment in good condition.
Improve productivity: With a dual-station design, it can perform refining at the same time, speeding up the entire steelmaking process.
Precise control: The composition of the molten steel can be monitored and adjusted in real time to improve the quality of the steel.
Save resources: By improving efficiency and reducing waste, the overall economic benefits are improved.
