Titanium slag smelting furnaces (also known as titanium slag electric furnaces) are a special type of electric furnace, falling between electric arc furnaces and submerged arc furnaces, specifically designed for the reduction smelting of ilmenite.
The core process involves mixing ilmenite with reducing agents such as anthracite or petroleum coke, selectively reducing iron oxides to metallic iron at a high temperature of 1400–1500℃. This enriches titanium oxides in the slag, achieving effective slag-iron separation and ultimately yielding high-grade titanium slag and byproduct molten iron.
Modern submerged arc furnace – titanium slag electric furnaces – generally employ a fully enclosed furnace design, equipped with a high-temperature gas purification system to achieve the recovery and clean treatment of smelting flue gas. Power supply is mostly AC, relying on electrothermal conversion to complete the smelting process, eliminating the need for traditional fossil fuels, resulting in significant advantages in energy saving and environmental protection.
This process uses titanium concentrate as the main raw material and coke as the reducing agent, stably producing high-titanium slag with a TiO₂ content of 85%–92%.
The operation employs a continuous feeding and periodic slag and iron tapping mode to ensure stable and efficient production.
The titanium slag electric furnaces typically has a circular or rectangular furnace body structure with an optimized internal thermal field design, achieving uniform heat distribution and thus improving slag formation efficiency and product quality.
